Nigeria and Germany Look to Strengthen Cultural and Bilateral Ties
The two countries’ representatives highlight the importance of culture and education for cooperation.

Nigeria and Germany are looking to strengthen their strategic partnership across several areas, including trade and investment, education, culture, innovation, regional peace and security, and people-to-people relations. The issue was discussed on 20 August 2026 in Berlin, when Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany, Ita Solomon Enang, received Germany’s Ambassador-designate to Nigeria, Stefan Roessel, at the Nigerian Embassy ahead of Roessel’s assignment in Abuja. During the meeting, Enang also handed over Roessel’s diplomatic visa, which had been processed by the Nigerian mission.
The meeting was presented as an opportunity to discuss how the two countries can deepen and modernise their strategic partnership. Alongside economic and security issues, both sides identified cultural exchange and education as areas for greater cooperation. Enang encouraged Roessel to travel widely across Nigeria and experience the country’s cultural diversity, economic opportunities and young population. He also called for a more balanced and factual understanding of Nigeria, while Roessel expressed his readiness to explore new areas of cooperation during his upcoming diplomatic assignment.
The discussion also reflects the broader relationship between Nigeria and Germany, which already includes cooperation in development, trade, education, investment and technical assistance. According to BusinessDay, both countries are now interested in broadening this relationship beyond traditional areas and identifying new opportunities for mutual benefit.
Culture can play an important role in this process. By encouraging the incoming German ambassador to engage with different parts of Nigeria and experience its diversity firsthand, the Nigerian side placed people-to-people contact alongside political and economic cooperation. The meeting therefore illustrates how cultural exchange can form part of a wider diplomatic relationship between two countries.
As Stefan Roessel prepares to take up his post in Abuja, the two countries will have an opportunity to turn these priorities into concrete forms of cooperation. For Nigeria and Germany, strengthening cultural and people-to-people links could become one part of a broader effort to build a stronger and more dynamic bilateral partnership.
