New Zealand High Commission in London Champions Maori Weaving Heritage
Transnational exhibition at Royal Academy showcases indigenous sustainability and living traditions

The High Commission of New Zealand in London, in a historic partnership with the Royal Academy of Arts, officially launched a landmark exhibition showcasing contemporary Māori weaving (Raranga) and sustainable architectural installations.
The high-profile summer initiative positions indigenous ecological knowledge and material culture as essential soft-power tools to address modern global environmental challenges.
The highly curated exhibition focuses on how traditional weaving techniques, using native New Zealand flax (Harakeke), can inspire modern, biodegradable design and sustainable urban architecture in Europe. By bringing master Māori weavers to lead public demonstrations and professional masterclasses in London, the New Zealand diplomatic mission successfully demonstrates how safeguarding intangible heritage offers practical solutions for the global fight against plastic pollution.
Central to the project's public diplomacy framework was an interactive symposium titled “Te Whare: Indigenous Architecture and the Green Transition”. During this session, New Zealand cultural attachés, indigenous architects, and British design critics analyzed how incorporating traditional communal space concepts into modern urban planning can foster social cohesion and combat urban isolation.
The exceptional public response and high-level media coverage demonstrated that indigenous-led cultural diplomacy is an incredibly powerful vehicle for international relations. By celebrating these ancient, sustainable practices in the heart of London’s art establishment, the New Zealand High Commission successfully strengthened its bilateral creative ties with the United Kingdom while championing the global voice of Pacific heritage.
