New Romanian Films: A Series of Films for German Audiences
May 08th, 2014
News from Berlin - ‘New Romanian Films’ is a series of encounters between Romanian film directors and the German audience. The program starts with the screening of a movie followed by a dialogue between the director and the audience. The third movie of this series, ‘I am an Old Communist Hag’ (‘Sunt o baba comunista’) directed by Stere Gulea, is an adaptation of the novel of the same name written by Romanian author Dan Lungu.
The movie unfolds the story of Emilia, a devoted follower of the Communist Regime even after its collapse, and her life after the revolution that ended Ceausescu’s era. Her daughter’s return from Canada, together with her American fiancée, triggers a series of melancholic reflections upon life before the revolution and the changes that have taken place in the years after. The movie presents, with an elegant and distinctive humor, the struggle of Emilia, who finds herself trapped between the remembrance of what she considers the peak of her life and the present. The screening will take place on May 29th at FSK Kino at 18:00.
Stere Gulea, the script writer and director of the movie is also the director and writer for various famous films, including ‘Morometii’ (1988) which is an adaptation of the novel of the same name, an influential part of Romanian art and history. He received several awards from The Romanian Directors’ Association (1975, 1977, and 1987), The Romanian Cineastes Union (1991, 1993, 1994-1995) and the Great San Marino Award.
