The Ambassador
H.E. Elias Jaime Zimba
H.E. Elias Jaime Zimba is a distinguished career diplomat from the Republic of Mozambique with a wealth of experience in bilateral relations, regional cooperation, and international affairs. Over his long career within the Mozambican Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, he has served in various senior capacities, developing a strong expertise in African political dynamics and international development. Notably, before his assignment to Europe, he served as the High Commissioner of the Republic of Mozambique to the Republic of Malawi, where he played a pivotal role in strengthening cross-border relations, managing trade networks, and fostering close collaboration within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) framework.
In May 2024, Ambassador Zimba officially took up his duties as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Mozambique to the Federal Republic of Germany. Operating from his diplomatic base in Berlin, his extensive mandate also includes serving as the non-resident ambassador concurrently accredited to Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and the Holy See (Vatican City). Known for his collaborative approach, his current tenure in Berlin is strongly focused on elevating Mozambique’s economic representation in Central Europe, promoting strategic investments in energy and agriculture, advocating for joint developmental projects, and deepening the long-standing bonds of friendship between Mozambique and Germany.
History
The German Democratic Republic (GDR) established diplomatic relations with Mozambique as early as 1975, the year it gained independence. Mozambique maintained close relations with the former GDR, where many Mozambicans studied and worked.
Following Mozambique’s civil war in 1992, Germany helped with the reconstruction of the country. The large number of high-level visits testify the strong nature of bilateral relations. Last year a delegation of five Mozambican members of parliament visited the German Bundestag and the German Bundesrat, holding talks with the Federal Foreign Office, and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
The main bond between Germany and Mozambique is arguably in development cooperation, as Germany is currently providing the country with approximately EUR 60 million per year. The economic relationship between these countries is also dynamic, thanks to Mozambique's natural resources, such as natural gas.
