Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Japan and Germany on Security Cooperation during NATO Summit
Commitment to intensify cooperation on global security issues
July 10th, 2025The Embassy of Japan in Berlin announced that the Foreign Minister of Japan, Iwaya Takeshi, participated in events in The Hague as part of the NATO summit, where he held bilateral talks with the Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Johann Wadephul, focusing on cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
The discussions between the two ministers followed up on previous G7 Foreign Ministers' meetings. Foreign Minister Iwaya explained that he hoped to further deepen discussions with his German counterpart, and conveyed appreciation for the strong relationship between Japan and Germany.
Federal Foreign Minister Wadephul reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to addressing key global challenges, along with further deepening cooperative relations between Japan and Germany, including cooperation on economic security and defense collaboration, particularly through Germany’s increasing engagement in the Indo-Pacific, including troop deployments.
The two sides also exchanged views on regional developments in the Indo-Pacific, including the situation with North Korea. They also discussed broader security challenges with the situation in the Middle East, and Ukraine for which Japan's continued support was acknowledged and appreciated by Foreign Minister Wadephul.
Foreign Minister Iwaya expressed Japan’s readiness to further advance cooperation, particularly in the field of security, and praised the expansion of Germany's engagement in the Indo-Pacific region. The meeting provided an opportunity for Japan and Germany to reaffirm their shared commitment to tackling global challenges and jointly promoting international stability.
