Manuela Schwesig Welcomes Japanese Ambassador to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
New Horizons in Tourism, Healthcare, Renewable Energy and Cultural Projects Discussed
June 26th, 2024On February 23, 2024, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s Minister-President Manuela Schwesig welcomed Japanese Ambassador Hidenao Yanagi for a visit that highlighted the partnership between Japan and the German state. The meeting focused on collaborative ventures in tourism, healthcare and renewable energy as well as discussed possibilities for future cultural exchanges.
The visit was an important event in the developing relationship between Japan and the northern German state. Schwesig noted the Ambassador’s interest in the region and highlighted the discussions on several key topics, including demographic shifts affecting the economy and workforce, the expansion of renewable energy and the promotion of tourism.
During their conversation, both leaders emphasized the importance of enhancing economic and cultural ties. Schwesig noted the potential for increased Japanese tourism in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and encouraged more visitors from Japan to explore the state’s cultural and natural attractions. She also announced that Mecklenburg-Vorpommern would be part of Germany’s presentation at the EXPO 2025 in Osaka, which is anticipated to strengthen the relationship between the two regions.
Another key point of their meeting was the art exhibition at the Bundesrat, a tradition maintained by the presiding state. On March 21, Schwesig inaugurated an exhibition featuring works by Japanese artist Hiroyuki Masuyama. His digital collages reinterpret the motifs of German painter Caspar David Friedrich, creating an artistic dialogue between the past and present, and between Germany and Japan. Schwesig mentioned that this exhibition celebrates the Caspar David Friedrich Year and also highlights contemporary Japanese art, promoting cultural exchange and mutual appreciation.
The exhibition is set to strengthen the cultural bridge between Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Japan, with Masuyama’s works also displayed at the Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald and in Caspar David Friedrich exhibitions in Hamburg and Berlin. This cultural initiative reflects the broader goals discussed during the Ambassador’s visit: enhancing bilateral cooperation in various sectors and promoting mutual understanding through cultural diplomacy.
In addition to these cultural and tourism initiatives, the discussions also touched on the shared challenges and opportunities in healthcare and renewable energy. Both regions are keen to explore collaborative projects that leverage their respective strengths, with a particular focus on sustainable development and innovative healthcare solutions.
The visit by Ambassador Yanagi to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern highlights the strengthening relationship between Japan and this German state. With mutual interests in tourism, healthcare and renewable energy, along with a commitment to cultural exchange, the relationship between Japan and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is expected to grow in the coming years.
