In June 2024, in a ceremony honoring Germany’s best student newspapers, the role of press freedom in democracy was highlighted. Manuela Schwesig, the Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, emphasized the importance of nurturing young journalists capable of distinguishing facts from fake news and providing objective information.

Schwesig congratulated the winning teams, noting the contribution of student newspapers to the free press. She emphasized the role of young journalists in fostering a well-informed society and supporting democratic values.

Noteworthy was the success of two student newspapers from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In the category of special needs schools, the project “Blind Date” from the Überregionales Förderzentrum für den Förderschwerpunkt Sehen in Neukloster won first place. This achievement highlights the center’s commitment to inclusive education for visually impaired students.

Additionally, the student newspaper "Der Koboldt" from Alexander-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium in Greifswald received a special award, recognizing the students’ talent and commitment to producing quality journalism.

Schwesig expressed her satisfaction with the recognition of local talents, highlighting Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s commitment to fostering skilled and conscientious journalists. She emphasized the importance of their ability to critically assess information and communicate effectively in an era of widespread misinformation.
