News from Berlin - The Korean festival, ‘Lotus Lantern Festival’, will be celebrated this Saturday May 10th at the Gärten der Welt in Berlin. This cultural encounter celebrates the birth of Buddha with traditional Korean music and dance. A beautiful light sea formed of lotus lanterns will be coordinated to honor Buddha, the ‘Enlightened One’, in the Asian garden during the evening. The program for the event also includes Korean storytelling, face painting for children and calligraphy. At 21:30 in the evening a big lantern parade will take place.

Buddha's Birthday, the birthday of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, is a holiday traditionally celebrated in Mahayana Buddhism. In Korea the day is celebrated according to the Lunisolar calendar and it is an official holiday. Many temples provide free meals and tea to all visitors and lotus lanterns cover entire temples throughout the month. In South Korea it is also celebrated with a week-long festival and on the first day a gala lantern parade stretches for miles through the city center of Seoul. In fact, Buddha's Birthday is the biggest Buddhist holiday in Korea.
