Since this year, EU companies must document CO2 emissions across their entire supply chain. The Berlin startup Kolum assists with this complex task.

For companies, dealing with increasingly complex EU regulations to reduce their CO2 footprint is a hassle, even though the climate crisis necessitates it. The startup Kolum, founded in Berlin at the end of 2023, voluntarily tackle this issue by helping European firms document their emissions in compliance with EU standards using software. Recently, they secured 2.1 million euros from investors, including Food Labs and Planetly founder Anna Alex.

Since 2005, EU companies have had to buy pollution rights for each ton of CO2 emitted during domestic production. Last year, this brought in over 18 billion euros in Germany alone, all of which goes into the Climate and Transformation Fund. by 2026, these documentation requirements will evolve into a CO2 certificate trading system, that means the importers will have to pay. From January this year, EU companies importing products from non-EU countries must specify the emissions of their supply chain.
