The Ambassador
H.E. Edwin Afande
H.E. Edwin Afande is a Kenyan senior diplomat who was appointed Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to the international organisations in Vienna in 2026. Before taking up the Vienna post, he served at the Kenya High Commission in London, including as Deputy Head of Mission and Acting High Commissioner.
His career has involved senior diplomatic and public-service responsibilities and representation of Kenya in bilateral and multilateral settings. In Vienna, his mandate includes relations with Austria as well as engagement with United Nations bodies and other international organisations headquartered in the city.
History
Austria and Kenya maintain friendly and cooperative bilateral relations, characterised by political dialogue, economic links, cultural exchange, tourism and multilateral cooperation. Diplomatic relations developed after Kenya’s independence in 1963, with Austria establishing an embassy in Nairobi in 1965. The relationship builds on earlier historical Contacts, including the establishment of an Austro-Hungarian honorary consulate in Mombasa in 1908. Today, cooperation includes cultural and people-to-people exchanges, development-related initiatives, tourism, and collaboration within international organisations, particularly those headquartered in Vienna.
