On 11 June, 2024, the Prime Ministers and State Governments of Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia met for a joint cabinet session in Leipzig. The topics included structural change, hospital reform, mandatory insurance for natural disaster damages.

Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst commented: “The cooperation between our states has a long tradition. Whether it is structural change, mandatory insurance for natural disaster damages, or migration – our states speak with one voice. One thing is clear: We have high expectations for the next Conference of Prime Ministers with the federal government”.

According to the State Chancellery in Dresden, the two Prime Ministers talked about change through technology and hospital reform. Topics such as the current security situation, cross-border cooperation and the discussion about compulsory insurance against natural hazards are also present in both federal states.

Both Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) and Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) are pushing for compulsory insurance against the consequences of natural disasters after the recent flood situations in some parts of the Federal Republic.

More than a year ago, the Federal Council called for the nationwide introduction of compulsory insurance against natural hazards. The Bundesrat's decision at the time stated that the federal government feared that this would place too high a burden on private households.
