Japan–UK Parliamentary Dinner Highlights Expanding Space Cooperation

On 25 February, Masaki Ikegami attended a dinner hosted by the British-Japanese Parliamentary Group at the Palace of Westminster. The event brought together parliamentarians, government representatives, and industry leaders to exchange views on the evolving partnership between Japan and the United Kingdom, with particular attention to cooperation in the field of space.
In his remarks, Minister Ikegami highlighted the growing strategic importance of activities in outer space. He noted that space technologies are increasingly essential for addressing global challenges, supporting communications, environmental monitoring, and scientific research, while also playing a critical role in security operations. Emphasising the strength of the bilateral relationship, he underlined that Japan–UK cooperation in the space sector is built on a deep and trusted strategic partnership that enables both countries to pursue ambitious projects and strengthen their technological capabilities.
The dinner was attended by several members of the UK Parliament actively engaged in strengthening bilateral ties, including Mark Hendrick, Chair of the British-Japanese Parliamentary Group; David Taylor; and Mark Garnier. Sharon Hodgson also participated, alongside cross-party members of both Houses of Parliament. Representatives from Japanese and British companies and organisations joined the discussion, reflecting the growing commercial dimension of bilateral cooperation in the rapidly expanding global space sector.
Beyond its technical focus, the event illustrated the importance of parliamentary diplomacy and cross-sector collaboration in advancing international partnerships. Exchanges between lawmakers, diplomats, and industry leaders create platforms for shaping policy frameworks that support innovation, trade, and security cooperation. In the case of Japan and the United Kingdom, collaboration in space technologies aligns with broader bilateral initiatives aimed at strengthening defence cooperation, research partnerships, and high-tech industrial collaboration.
The evening concluded with participants reaffirming their shared commitment to expanding Japan–UK cooperation in space exploration, innovation, and technology development. Through continued dialogue among policymakers, industry, and diplomatic representatives, both countries aim to strengthen a forward-looking partnership that contributes to economic growth, scientific advancement, and international stability.
