Japanese Embassy Supports Economic and Cultural Exchange at Vienna Airport Cherry Blossom Event
Expanding Bilateral Commercial Ties and Cultivating Traditional Cultural Dialogue

The Japanese Ambassador to Austria, Kiminori Iwama, participated in the "Cherry Blossom Business and Culture Event 2026" organized by Vienna Airport on May 18, 2026.
This high-level event, focusing on Japan for the fourth time, served as an important platform for bilateral economic diplomacy. The conference brought together leading figures from politics, business, and culture to further expand strategic cooperation between both nations.
At the heart of the event was a high-profile panel discussion featuring Ambassador Iwama alongside Dr. Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs, Energy and Tourism; Prof. Günther Ofner, CFO of Flughafen Wien AG; and Tadashi Murakami, Head of the JETRO office in Vienna. During the debate, the Ambassador used concrete examples to illustrate the growing momentum of economic relations on both private and public levels. He particularly highlighted the lasting impetus generated by the Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai last year.
Ambassador Iwama emphasized Austria's strategic attractiveness as a central logistical and economic hub for the Central and Eastern European (CEE) region. Given the rising number of Japanese companies establishing themselves in the country, he reaffirmed the Japanese Embassy's continuous and active commitment to supporting corporate investments. The economic program was complemented by a forward-looking online session on the cooperation between Vienna Airport, Haneda Airport, and the Ota district, as well as innovative presentations by Japanese start-up companies.
Beyond the economic aspects, the event offered a diverse cultural program that showcased the deep societal connections between both countries as an instrument of public diplomacy. Visitors were able to participate in interactive workshops on traditional Japanese tea ceremony and calligraphy. Additionally, numerous Austrian cities and municipalities set up stands to present their active sister-city and friendship relations with Japanese municipalities, strengthening cultural exchange at the grassroots level.
