On 26 May, Japan and Germany convened the 25th Meeting of the Japan-Germany Joint Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation in Tokyo, reaffirming their long-standing commitment to strategic collaboration in research and innovation. Established under the 1974 bilateral agreement, the committee serves as a high-level forum to evaluate past results and set priorities for future cooperation.

The meeting was co-chaired by Hiroshi Kawamura, Japan's Ambassador for Science and Technology Cooperation, and Christian Stertz, Head of Department 214 (Cooperation with Asia and Oceania) at Germany's Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Dr Silke Launert, Parliamentary State Secretary at the German Ministry, also participated, alongside representatives from the research funding bodies, universities, academies of science and scientific institutions of both countries.

Participants presented national progress in science, technology and innovation policy, holding in-depth discussions on joint efforts across key areas including artificial intelligence, robotics, semiconductors, quantum technologies, telecommunications, fusion energy, hydrogen, marine and polar research, the bioeconomy and research security and integrity.

The Joint Committee, which alternates its sessions between Japan and Germany, is a key mechanism for implementing the 1974 Agreement on Scientific and Technological Cooperation. The previous meeting (the 24^(th) edition) took place in Bonn in February 2023. Both parties emphasised the importance of strengthening collaboration to address global challenges and encourage science-driven innovation for the benefit of both countries and the global community.
