James Nachtwey: Memoria – Humanity Captured in Conflict
A photographic journey into conflict, compassion, and human resilience
April 08th, 2026Fotografiska Berlin, presents James Nachtwey: Memoria, a powerful exhibition exploring more than four decades of the photojournalist’s work. Nachtwey’s images document the human consequences of war, social upheaval, and systemic injustice, capturing moments of suffering, resilience, and compassion that transcend borders.
The exhibition focuses on the individual’s place within larger historical crises, portraying the ways people endure and respond to extreme circumstances. Each photograph is both a testament to memory and a call to awareness: Nachtwey frames photography not just as documentation, but as an instrument against forgetting, a medium that preserves stories and human experiences that might otherwise be erased.
Nachtwey’s career was shaped by the images of the Vietnam War and the American civil rights movement, instilling in him a sense of moral responsibility long before he picked up a camera. Over the years, he moved from local newspaper assignments to global frontline reporting, maintaining a methodology rooted in empathy, instinct, and a deep belief in the dignity of those he photographs. His work connects audiences across distance and difference, revealing both the urgency of the present and the timeless significance of human endurance.
The exhibition runs from 31 January to 3 May 2026. Visitors can experience Nachtwey’s striking images in a space designed to invite reflection, remembrance, and engagement with the world’s ongoing humanitarian challenges.
