The seminar “An Italian-German Dialogue on Industrial Decarbonization of the Automotive Sector” was held to address shared climate goals in a sector vital to both countries’ economies. This was the first of two seminars bringing together Italian and German experts, institutional representatives, and private sector stakeholders to discuss the political, technological, and geopolitical strategies for industrial transformation in the automotive and steel industries.

Representatives from the Italian Embassy in Berlin and Germany’s Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs participated in the seminar, organized by the Institute of International Affairs (IAI), and within the framework of the research project “Dialogue Italian-German on industrial decarbonization: focus on the automotive and steel industries in the context of the Energy Transition”.

Held in Berlin, the event gathered over one hundred participants, including representatives from business associations, companies, ministries, research centers, and universities. Key speakers included Michele Valensise, President of IAI and former Italian Ambassador to Germany; Thomas Frisch, Head of the Automotive Sector Unit of the Federal Ministry for Economy and Energy; Manuel Kallweit, Head of the Economic Intelligence Department of the German Automotive Industry Association (VDA); and Fabrizia Vigo, Director of Institutional and Legal Affairs at the Italian Association of the Automotive Industry (ANFIA).

Regarding the seminar, Italian Ambassador to Germany Fabrizio Bucci emphasized the joint goal of combining decarbonization with industrial competitiveness, highlighting the leadership responsibility in the automotive and climate transition, leveraging Italy's low-emission systems innovations and Germany's strategically advanced automotive industry.

This Italian-German coordination effort on the industrial energy transition aims to strengthen both bilateral and European cooperation, accelerating sustainability while preserving industrial competitiveness.
