Italian Embassy - - Celebrating Contemporary Art & Cultural Dialogue
Ambassador strengthens diaspora ties and bilateral cooperation through regional diplomatic outreach
March 03rd, 2026On 24 February 2026, the Embassy of Italy in London inaugurated the exhibition Intracosm by Italian artist Carolina Mazzolari at Italy House in London. The opening combined visual arts and performance through a special appearance by Kristen McNally, Principal Character Artist of the Royal Ballet. The event formed part of the Embassy’s broader cultural programming aimed at strengthening artistic exchange between Italy and the United Kingdom, demonstrating how cultural initiatives serve as a key pillar of contemporary diplomacy by fostering dialogue through creativity and shared cultural experiences.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Inigo Lambertini described Intracosm as a project that unites artistic research, contemporary sensitivity, and interdisciplinary dialogue. He emphasized that Mazzolari’s work—translating psychological and emotional states into expressive textile forms—reflects the dynamism and diversity of Italian creativity abroad. The Ambassador noted that initiatives of this kind reinforce the embassy’s role as a platform for cultural encounter, supporting Italy’s broader diplomatic objective of promoting cultural cooperation within the framework of longstanding Italy–United Kingdom relations and wider European cultural exchange networks.
The exhibition brought together multiple artistic disciplines, with Kristen McNally’s performance adding a kinetic dimension that connected movement and visual expression. Mazzolari, born in Milan and based in London since 2014, works across textiles, sculpture, photography, video, and performance, drawing inspiration from psychoanalysis, cognitive studies, and biomimetic forms. Educated at the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti (NABA) in Milan and the Chelsea College of Arts, her international exhibition record includes presentations at the Freud Museum London, the Royal Academy of Arts, Palazzo Zaguri in Venice, and the Museo di Santa Croce in Genoa, with works held in the permanent collection of the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Tasmania. The interdisciplinary nature of the exhibition illustrated the increasingly global character of contemporary artistic collaboration.
Beyond its artistic dimension, the exhibition highlighted cultural diplomacy as a strategic instrument for strengthening bilateral ties by connecting creative industries, institutions, and audiences. Cultural events hosted by diplomatic missions contribute to long-term cooperation not only in the arts but also in education, tourism, and the broader creative economy—sectors that play a growing role in international relations. By showcasing Italian artists active in London, the Embassy supported cross-cultural dialogue while reinforcing Italy’s cultural presence within one of Europe’s most influential artistic hubs.
Intracosm reflects the Embassy of Italy’s commitment to promoting cultural exchange as an integral component of diplomacy. By creating a space where Italian and British artistic communities intersect, the initiative advances mutual understanding while strengthening institutional and creative partnerships. As cultural diplomacy continues to complement political and economic engagement, such initiatives contribute to sustaining enduring Italy–United Kingdom relations grounded in shared artistic innovation and intercultural collaboration.
