“Is the Wall Really Gone?” Symposium on Overcoming Psychological Wall in Germany and Korea

Organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and Humboldt University on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall

On June 5, 2019, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea organized together with Humboldt University an expert seminar on overcoming the psychological wall in Germany and Korea on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

H.E. Ambassador of the Republic of Korea Bum Goo Jong emphasized in his welcome speech that reunification is not just the union of land, but primarily means the exchange and communication of people and society.

He also stated that German reunification had laid the foundation for European unity and world peace. In this regard, he hopes that the establishment of peace on the Korean Peninsula will not only contribute to the peace in Northeast Asia, but beyond the world peace.

About 100 students and experts attended the seminar especially with the presence of H.E Christian Hirte, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy of Germany, Dr. Sabine Kunst, President of the Humboldt University, H.E. Hans Modrow, former Prime Minister, H.E. Michael Geier, former Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Republic of Korea, H.E. Thomas Schäfer, former Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Dr. Uwe Schmelter, Vice President of the German-Korean Association and Ms. Nora Müller, Director of the office of the Körber Foundation.

In addition, Dr. Axel Klausmeier (Director of the Berlin Wall Foundation), Dr. Michael Burda (HU Berlin), Dr. Sebastian Siegloch (University of Mannheim), Dr. Katrin Schmelz (University of Konstanz), Dr. Yongseon Yun (Hansung University), Dr. Eun-Jeung Lee (Free University), Dr. Joon-young Hur (Korea Institute of Public Administration), Dr. Woo-young Lee (University of North Korean Studies), Dr. Myung-lim Park (Yonsei University) and Dr. Dong-ki Lee (Gangneung-Wonju University) participated in a lively panel discussion.
