The International Museum Day organised first in 1977 by the International Council of Museums aims to raise awareness about the key-role of museums as the very heart of cultures.

Indeed, this year’s event will focus on the theme “Museums as Cultural Hubs: the future of tradition”, in order to underline the importance of museums in preserving art and culture and in defining a sustainable future.

Organised on May 18th each year, or around this date, the IMD celebrates the fact that “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples”.
More and more countries are taking part to the celebration, by promoting special activities and guided tours. Also Germany participates to the event: the appointment is the 19th of May in all the museums involved in the initiative (the complete list at www.museumstag.de).

In a world where the cultural diversity is under attack, the role of museums is becoming even more fundamental in building dialogue and mutual comprehension among different countries and for leading to a durable peace.
