Indian Ambassador Honoured the Country’s Olympic Flagbearer in Berlin

Abhinav Bindra, India’s only gold medallist, has been received by the Ambassador of India to Germany, Gurjit Singh, at the India House

At the beginning of the event Mr. Bindra was introduced by the Indian Ambassador, who portrayed him as an inspiration and role model to the young people of India. At an extremely young age in 2008 he won an individual gold medal in the 10m rifle shooting, a historic event for the country. This paved the way for many new passionate sportsmen and induced increased support from the government and other sources for such activities.

The Indian Ambassador also stressed that it was thanks to young passionate athletes like Mr. Bindra, that the increased dedication of young people in India in sporting activities like these, could now be seen throughout the country. Ambassador Singh also mentioned that ESPN declared Mr. Bindra’s gold medal as India’s greatest sporting moment, a point with which he fully agrees.

Mr. Bindra had just flown from a competition in Munich, and is a regular visitor to Germany as he trained here. He further said that he is very proud to have been chosen as a flagbearer for the Olympic Games. He spoke to several people of his experiences, his passion, and his hopes for the future. Mr. Bindra said that he is not planning on participating in other Olympics after this one, and held a Q&A session with the audience after his speech.
