House of One Foundation Hosts Interfaith Fasting Observances of Lent and Ramadan
House of One Foundation organizes communal reflection and iftar events in Berlin
March 06th, 2026In 2026, Christian and Muslim believers experienced a rare overlap of religious observances: Ash Wednesday marked the beginning of Lent for Christians, while at sunset on the same day, Ramadan commenced for Muslims. Such simultaneity is exceptional, last occurring more than 100 years ago. The House of One Foundation, a Berlin-based interfaith institution, has highlighted this unique moment as an opportunity for reflection on shared spiritual values and community engagement. These events also reinforce the broader significance of interreligious dialogue within a multicultural urban setting.
Although the fasting practices differ, the underlying intentions are closely aligned. Imam Osman Örs of the House of One emphasized that fasting extends beyond refraining from food; it encourages inner reflection, contemplation, and compassion for those in need. Protestant theologian Patricia Böckmann noted that Lent and Ramadan similarly invite individuals to assess personal priorities and cultivate awareness of others, exemplified by the Protestant Church’s Lenten motto, “With Compassion! Seven Weeks Without Harshness,” and the Catholic theme, “Listening and Fasting. Lent as a Time of Conversion.” These observances foster spiritual growth while reinforcing ethical and social values common to both communities.
Fasting also serves as a mechanism for stepping outside habitual routines, allowing participants to focus on silence, reflection, and appreciation of simple things. It strengthens communal bonds and encourages charitable contributions. During Ramadan, the House of One Foundation hosted a communal iftar on 4 March at the Wilhelmstadt Schools in Spandau. In collaboration with the Berlin Mitte district and partner organizations, the Foundation also organized an open-air iftar on 12 March at Leopoldplatz, welcoming participants of all faiths and backgrounds. These gatherings exemplify structured engagement that deepens social cohesion and mutual understanding within the city’s diverse population.
By facilitating these interfaith activities, the House of One Foundation contributes to cultural diplomacy, promoting dialogue and cooperation between different religious communities in Berlin. The events underscore the role of religious observances as instruments for fostering social solidarity, shared ethical reflection, and inclusive community engagement. Such initiatives demonstrate the potential of interfaith programming to reinforce long-term civic and cultural collaboration.
