High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development 2026
Global leaders convene in New York to accelerate Sustainable Development Goal implementation

From July 7 to July 16, 2026, ministers and high-level representatives convened at the United Nations Headquarters in New York for the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF). Under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), participants met to address the theme of "Transformative, equitable, innovative and coordinated actions" for the 2030 Agenda. This diplomatic assembly, led by ECOSOC President Lok Bahadur Thapa, focused on finalizing a ministerial declaration to demonstrate a collective political will to overcome global challenges.
The forum featured the active engagement of diverse Member States, with 36 countries, including Albania, Brazil, and Rwanda, presenting Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) to share their progress and lessons learned. The negotiation process for the ministerial declaration was stewarded by co-facilitators from Albania and Sierra Leone, illustrating a commitment to inclusive multilateralism. This collaborative effort was supported financially by the Government of Germany and the PVBLIC Foundation, highlighting the importance of international partnerships in sustaining global dialogue.
Central to the 2026 session were in-depth reviews of five specific goals: water and sanitation (SDG 6), sustainable energy (SDG 7), resilient infrastructure (SDG 9), sustainable cities (SDG 11), and global partnerships (SDG 17). Participants addressed critical setbacks caused by rising inequality, debt burdens, and climate change. The discussions emphasized that achieving these targets requires a coordinated global response that respects international law and provides inclusive support to developing nations.
The forum underscored that sustainable development is inseparable from international peace and cultural exchange. It highlighted the necessity of inclusive partnerships involving civil society, academia, and youth to localize the SDGs effectively. By fostering a shared "science-policy interface" and promoting digital cooperation, the forum sought to bridge technological divides and ensure that the benefits of innovation are distributed equitably across different national contexts.
As the implementation of the 2030 Agenda enters its final years, the adoption of the 2026 ministerial declaration sends a strong signal of collective determination. The forum sets the stage for an ambitious 2027 SDG Summit, reinforcing the unwavering commitment to "leave no one behind". Through continued diplomatic exchange and shared responsibility, the international community remains focused on securing a sustainable future for all.
