Hendrik Wüst honoured Westphalian Resistance Heroes in Warburg
Brave resistance fighters stood up against the ideological madness of National Socialism
June 26th, 2024On 17 June, 2024, a ceremony in the Hanseatic city of Warburg commemorated the Westphalians Wilhelm von Ketterer and Josef Wirmer. “Their commitment is unimaginable to us today,” praised the President of North Rhine-Westphalia Hendrik Wüst.
In the summer of 1944, a group led by Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler with a bomb. Among the resistance fighters were the Westphalians Josef Wirmer and Wilhelm Freiherr von Ketteler.
Warburg commemorated their resistance on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Stauffenberg assassination attempt with a ceremony, during which Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst delivered the keynote speech. Prior to this, Prime Minister Wüst, together with members of the Wirmer family, unveiled a new commemorative plaque.
The Prime Minister also commented: “Our democracy is under threat. Extremism, hate, and agitation attack our freedom. The legacy of the resistance fighters against National Socialism is also an obligation for us – to defend democracy and freedom, justice and Europe. That is why remembering these brave men is so important.”
