June 24th, 2024On 3 May, 2024, Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia Hendrik Wüst awarded the Rescue Medal of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia to fourteen individuals in Düsseldorf. All of them put their own lives at risk to save others from life-threatening situations. Fourteen impressive stories full of courage, selflessness, and a willingness to help others whose lives were in acute danger.
Additionally, the Prime Minister issued a Public Commendation to a person who supported a rescue effort. The award ceremony took place in the evening as part of a formal event at Ständehaus K 21 in Düsseldorf.
Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst commented: "In some situations, it is crucial for people to act courageously and without hesitation—especially when fellow human beings are in acute danger. The fourteen people who are being awarded the Rescue Medal of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia today did exactly that: with their brave and selfless efforts, they saved others from life-threatening situations where there would have been no rescue without their help. They did not look away but stepped in and helped at the risk of their own lives. For this, they deserve our utmost respect—they are role models for all of us."
The Rescue Medal of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia has been awarded since 1951 based on the State Recognition Act for rescue acts. It honours individuals who have saved others from life-threatening situations at the risk of their own lives. In total, the solid silver medal has been awarded to 1,391 citizens to date.
