The Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata will host a special evening of classical piano music on 29 August 2025, featuring acclaimed German pianist Andreas König. The recital, titled Milestones in German Piano Music – Beethoven & Brahms, will explore the timeless works of Beethoven and Brahms, with an evocative detour into Claude Debussy’s music, highlighting his rare connection to India.

The program showcases Brahms’s most intimate and reflective late works, including the Intermezzo in A major, Op. 118 No. 2 and the darker Intermezzo in E-flat minor, Op. 118 No. 6. These pieces will be performed alongside Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in A major, Op. 101, a landmark of the composer’s late period, praised for its structural innovation and lyrical depth. Adding a cross-cultural dimension, König will perform Debussy’s Pagodes, inspired by South and East Asian musical traditions, before concluding with the Paganini Variations, Op. 35, Brahms’s dazzling homage to virtuosity.

Admission is free and open to all, with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis. The concert offers Kolkata audiences a rare opportunity to hear works spanning Germany’s greatest musical legacies, interpreted by one of its most versatile contemporary pianists.

Born in Nuremberg, Andreas König has received international recognition as a prizewinner in competitions such as Jugend musiziert (Cologne), the Steinway Piano Competition in Berlin, and the International Piano Competition in Porto. He has performed with leading orchestras, including the Berlin Symphony Orchestra and the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, and has refined his artistry through studies in Würzburg, Frankfurt, and Madrid, working under acclaimed professors such as Lev Natochenny, Ralf Gothóni, and Eldar Nebolsin.

By presenting Milestones in German Piano Music, the Goethe-Institut Kolkata reaffirms its commitment to fostering cultural exchange through music, bridging European traditions with Indian audiences in an intimate evening of artistry and dialogue.
