From 1–3 February 2026, the Republic of Ghana undertook a significant step toward strengthening its relations with the Republic of Latvia through a ministerial working visit led by the Honourable Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. The visit highlighted Ghana’s commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation, advancing diplomatic dialogue, and ensuring the protection and welfare of Ghanaian citizens abroad. The Ambassador of Ghana to the Federal Republic of Germany, H.E. Prof. Ohene Adjei, who is concurrently accredited to Latvia, actively participated in the visit, underscoring the Embassy’s central role in supporting Ghana’s diplomatic engagement in the region.

During the visit, the Honourable Minister held high-level consultations with Latvian counterparts, including a bilateral meeting with H.E. Ms Baiba Braže, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia. Discussions focused on areas of mutual interest and opportunities to expand cooperation between the two countries. The Latvian authorities reaffirmed their readiness to cooperate fully with the Government of Ghana in pursuing truth and justice concerning the tragic death of Ghanaian student Mr. Nana Adjei Ahyia in Riga, demonstrating a shared commitment to transparency and accountability.

The programme further included engagements with Latvia’s Ministries of the Interior, Education and Science, alongside meetings with representatives of key private-sector institutions. These discussions explored prospects for collaboration in priority sectors such as information and communication technology, energy, agro-business, and innovation. The exchanges reflected both countries’ interest in strengthening economic and technical partnerships while fostering knowledge exchange and sustainable development.

Throughout the visit, Ambassador Prof. Ohene Adjei played an active diplomatic role, reinforcing the Embassy’s contribution to advancing Ghana–Latvia relations and facilitating high-level dialogue. On the margins of the programme, the Ambassador presented copies of his Letters of Credence to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, marking an important step in formalizing his diplomatic accreditation and further consolidating bilateral engagement.

The working visit demonstrated Ghana’s proactive and forward-looking diplomatic approach, combining political dialogue, economic cooperation, and consular responsibility. By strengthening institutional partnerships and reaffirming its commitment to protecting its citizens overseas, Ghana continues to advance mutually beneficial relations with Latvia while laying a solid foundation for future collaboration between the two nations.
