In Ethiopia's lowlands, severe droughts and flash floods have historically devastated farming. As of recently, Germany has been cooperating with the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture to help resolve the issue.

The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture and other local partners in Ethiopia launched projects for building weirs from natural stone to slow down water flow during heavy rains.

As a result, over 38,000+ hectares of land have become suitable for farming again.

The main goal of the initiative is to improve water access and the availability of arable so that there is more sustainable farming in Ethiopia.

Germany is a key strategic partner to Ethiopia and the two countries have a strong bilateral relationship, as underscored by Ambassador Mesganu Arga.

Recently, Mr. Arga met with Heiko Nitzschke, Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa of the Federal Republic of Germany, to discuss issues concerning the Horn of Africa, regional matters of mutual interest, and Ethiopia’s significant role in the region.

Mr. Nitzschke reinstated Germany’s commitment to strengthen collaboration with Ethiopia.
