On Thursday, April 3, 2025, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz welcomed King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein of Jordan to Berlin for a bilateral meeting focused on strengthening cooperation and addressing key regional issues. According to the official website of the Federal Chancellor, the leaders exchanged views on the situation in the Palestinian territories, particularly in Gaza, and in Syria. Chancellor Scholz stated that “Germany and Jordan stand united in promoting peace, providing humanitarian aid, and creating perspectives for a better future.”

Chancellor Scholz emphasized the close and longstanding friendship between Germany and Jordan, which spans over 70 years. He described Jordan as a pillar of stability in the Middle East and expressed deep appreciation for its humanitarian efforts. “Germany will remain a trusted partner — supporting refugees, stabilizing the region, and contributing to economic development in Jordan and neighboring countries,” Scholz affirmed.

The discussion also covered the situation in Gaza and Syria, as well as recent U.S. customs decisions. Scholz highlighted Jordan’s diplomatic initiatives and crucial role in facilitating humanitarian support. King Abdullah II raised concern over violations at Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, “noting that such actions only escalate tensions and hinder peace efforts”. He took the opportunity to thank Germany for its unwavering support and commitment to regional stability.

Lastly, both leaders jointly inaugurated the Global Disability Summit in Berlin, organized in cooperation with the International Disability Alliance. The summit reflected their shared commitment to promoting the rights of persons with disabilities. King Abdullah II also mentioned his meetings with representatives of German companies, where potential areas for strengthened cooperation in the industrial, commercial, technological, and energy sectors were identified. In addition, he expressed his gratitude to Germany for its support in vocational training and the modernization of the public sector.

The meeting reaffirmed the strategic partnership between Germany and Jordan. Chancellor Scholz thanked King Abdullah II for the open and constructive dialogue, describing the talks as highly productive. King Abdullah II called the visit to Germany a success and noted strengthened ties with other European nations. Scholz concluded by stressing the importance of joint efforts — including those of the EU, the U.S., and regional partners — to support reconstruction in the West Bank and Gaza. “People need hope,” he said. “And hope is the foundation for lasting peace.”
