French Cultural Diplomacy in Berlin
The Institut français Berlin presents French and international artistic perspectives through its summer 2026 programme

Cultural diplomacy often takes place beyond official negotiations and diplomatic meetings. Through exhibitions, artistic exchanges and public programmes, cultural institutions create spaces where societies encounter new ideas and perspectives. In Berlin, the Institut français continues this tradition by presenting contemporary artistic voices that explore questions of identity, memory, society and the relationship between humanity and the environment.
During the summer of 2026, the Institut français Berlin presents several artistic projects that reflect the role of culture as a bridge between France, Germany and the wider international community.
“La femme forêt”: Exploring Identity, Nature and Feminine Perspectives
From 19 June to 28 August 2026, the Institut français Berlin presents “La femme forêt”, an exhibition by French artist Delphine Garcia. The exhibition brings together collage, photography and mixed-media works that explore themes including femininity, identity and humanity’s relationship with nature.
Garcia’s artistic language combines personal photographs, botanical elements, fragments of images and contemporary techniques to create compositions reflecting memory, transformation and connection. The exhibition forms part of the Institut français Berlin’s thematic programme “Ouvrir la voie(x)”, which addresses questions related to feminism and equality.
From a cultural diplomacy perspective, the exhibition demonstrates how artistic exchange can contribute to international dialogue around shared global themes, including gender equality, sustainability and social transformation.
“Les Vitrines”: Supporting Contemporary Artistic Exchange
Another important initiative is “Les Vitrines 2026”, a contemporary art project organised by the Institut français Berlin and the Bureau des arts plastiques of the Institut français d’Allemagne. The programme provides a platform for contemporary artists and encourages exchange between artists, curators and the Berlin public.
The 2026 edition, curated by Lila Torquéo, presents the works of artists Fabienne Audéoud and Angharad Williams under the title “Live to Dress”.
The exhibition by Angharad Williams, presented from 9 July 2026, explores language, visual culture and perception through paintings centred around the word “Love” and its transformation as an artistic symbol.
Culture as a Bridge Between France and Germany
The activities of the Institut français Berlin demonstrate the continuing importance of cultural diplomacy in contemporary international relations. Rather than presenting culture simply as a representation of national identity, cultural institutions increasingly create platforms for dialogue, cooperation and shared reflection.
Through exhibitions such as “La femme forêt” and “Les Vitrines”, French cultural diplomacy in Berlin contributes to a wider European conversation about creativity, social questions and the role of art in connecting societies.
