The third edition of European Literature Night 2026 marks a significant moment in the ongoing cultural exchange between Europe and Hong Kong. Originally launched in Prague in 2006, the initiative has evolved into a respected international platform for contemporary European literature. Returning to Hong Kong in February 2026 after two successful editions, the event will once again form part of the Hong Kong International Literary Festival, offering the public free access to diverse literary voices from across Europe.

Taking place on Friday, 27 February 2026, from 18:00 to 22:40, European Literature Night will unfold across multiple venues in Central and Sheung Wan. The programme will feature live English-language readings every 30 minutes, allowing audiences to move freely between locations and experience literature in distinctive, non-traditional settings. With participation from 12 European countries, Czechia, Germany, Spain, Finland, France, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Ukraine, Belgium and Slovenia, the event highlights the richness and diversity of contemporary European writing while fostering an inclusive and accessible cultural atmosphere.

Germany’s presence at European Literature Night 2026 was marked by the inclusion of About People, a contemporary novel by Juli Zeh, presented in English translation. This work, noted for its acute observation of personal and societal dynamics, provided Hong Kong audiences with insight into modern German literary innovation and thematic depth.

Germany’s involvement in ELN 2026 exemplifies its broader commitment in European cultural diplomacy. Through the Goethe‑Institut and partnership with EUNIC and diplomatic missions, Germany plays a part in coordinating literary representation, facilitating translations, and supporting local engagement initiatives. By bringing German literature into dialogue with European counterparts in an Asian city, this contribution underscored Germany’s dedication to fostering intercultural understanding, promoting linguistic diversity, and strengthening the bonds between European and Hong Kong literary communities. Such engagements reflect not only artistic collaboration but also sustained diplomatic efforts to enhance mutual comprehension through shared cultural experience.
