The Ambassador

H.E. Oleksii Makeiev

H.E. Oleksii Makeiev has been serving as the Ambassador of Ukraine to the Federal Republic of Germany since October 2022. Born on November 25, 1975, in Kyiv, he graduated from the Institute of International Relations at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv in 1997, earning a degree in International Relations and Spanish translation.

Ambassador Makeiev began his diplomatic career in 1996 while still a student, working in the Department of Analysis and Planning/Political Department at Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, focusing on international security issues. Over the years, he advanced from Attaché to Political Director.

From 1999 to 2002, Ambassador Makeiev served in the Political Section of the Ukrainian Embassy in Switzerland. Upon returning to Kyiv, he worked in the Ministry’s Department of Political Analysis and Planning, concentrating on international process analysis. Between 2005 and 2009, he served as Counselor at the Ukrainian Embassy in Berlin, handling the political aspects of Ukraine-Germany bilateral relations.

From 2014 to 2020, as Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Makeiev played a key role in shaping Ukraine’s strategy to counter Russian aggression, addressing information security threats, and enhancing proactive communication efforts.

In May 2020, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, appointed him as the Special Representative for Sanctions Policy. Following Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Ambassador Makeiev contributed significantly to coordinating international efforts within the sanctions coalition to intensify pressure on the Russian Federation.

On September 23, 2022, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed him as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Germany. He assumed his duties in Berlin on October 17, 2022.

Ambassador Makeiev is fluent in German, English, Spanish, and French. In his free time, he enjoys being a hobby pilot, and playing badminton and tennis.

In 1992, the diplomatic relations between Germany and Ukraine were renewed. In June 1993, President Kravchuk and Chancellor Kohl signed the Joint Declaration on the basis of relations between the two countries. In 1998 the first Ukrainian-German intergovernmental consultation took place in Bonn. The two countries are also involved in cultural, humanitarian, trade, economic and scientific cooperation. There is also an important Ukrainian diaspora in Germany since about 130,000 Ukrainians are currently living in the country.
