Embassy of Thailand Hosts Reception Honouring GISTDA Executive Director’s COPUOS Chairmanship
Thai Embassy in Vienna honours Dr. Pakorn Apaphant on assuming STSC Chairmanship
February 17th, 2026On 4 February 2026, H.E. Ms. Pattarat Hongtong, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Thailand to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Vienna, hosted a reception at the Thai Residence in honour of Dr. Pakorn Apaphant, Executive Director of the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA). The event marked his assumption of the role as Chair of the 63rd Session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee (STSC) of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS).
The reception was attended by Ambassadors and members of the diplomatic corps, the Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), as well as representatives from international space agencies. These included JAXA (Japan), KASA (Republic of Korea), CNSA (China), ISRO (India), PhilSA (Philippines), OSTIn (Singapore), the European Space Agency (ESA), and NASA (United States), among others.
In her remarks, Ambassador Pattarat Hongtong extended her congratulations, noting that this Chairmanship reflects Thailand’s strong commitment to promoting international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space. She underscored the importance of bridging technological gaps among countries to ensure that all nations benefit from advancements in space technology in an equitable and sustainable manner.
On the same occasion, Dr. Pakorn Apaphant shared his vision for the future direction of Thailand’s space technology development, highlighting the importance of strengthening cooperative networks with countries worldwide. His appointment as Chair has attracted considerable interest from policymakers and the public in Thailand, serving as a catalyst for enhancing awareness of the country’s capabilities in space development.
The reception reaffirmed Thailand’s dedication to advancing international collaboration and promoting inclusive access to the benefits of space technology, in line with the objectives of COPUOS and the broader global community.
