Sri Lanka Afternoon highlights culture and tourism in Austria
September 12th, 2025The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Vienna, in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) and the Austria–Sri Lanka Friendship Association, organized the outdoor promotional event “Sri Lanka Afternoon” at a public garden in Hirschstetten, Austria. The initiative marked the revival of annual cultural gatherings that had been paused during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event attracted a diverse international audience and highlighted Sri Lanka’s culinary traditions, cultural performances, and tourism potential under the theme “Brand Sri Lanka.” Held in parallel with the Austrian International Cultural Association’s cultural series, the program positioned Sri Lanka alongside other South Asian countries.
Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Austria, M.R.K. Lenagala, officially opened the event, noting that the initiative aligns with the SLTPB’s strategic objectives to enhance Sri Lanka’s visibility in Europe through cultural engagement. He expressed confidence that such efforts would contribute to the country’s national tourism target of three million visitors in 2025.
Highlights of the program included traditional dances performed by the Nartakah Dancing Academy in Vienna, as well as Sri Lankan cuisine prepared by culinary expert Ruwan Fernando. Stalls from SPA Ceylon and Travels Destination Management (Pvt) Limited added to the promotion, while visitors also enjoyed the opportunity to sample Ceylon Tea at the Embassy’s stand.
The event underscored the growing cultural and tourism ties between Austria and Sri Lanka, reinforcing Vienna’s role as a hub for international cultural diplomacy.
