On July 15, 2025, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Germany, in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) and the Hertha-Müller-Haus in Berlin, organized a one-day tourism promotion event titled “Explore Sri Lanka.” The initiative, the first of its kind in Germany targeting senior citizens, aimed to raise awareness of Sri Lanka as a destination for long-term stays while highlighting the country’s wellness offerings, cultural heritage, and hospitality.

The event brought together over 100 participants, including senior citizens and their family members, at Hertha-Müller-Haus, a community and leisure center in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district. Ambassador Varuni Muthukumarana welcomed attendees, encouraging them to experience Sri Lanka at a leisurely pace, emphasizing its suitability for older travelers interested in wellness, Ayurveda treatments, and cultural immersion.

Participants attended presentations by Prasad Buwanekabahu of Sathya Ayurveda on traditional healing practices, and Dr. Irene Riedel of Suvarivi Ayurveda on options for long-term stays in Sri Lanka. The program also featured a cookery demonstration and interactive contest preparing Pol Sambol, along with vibrant cultural performances showcasing Kandyan, Low Country, and Bharata Natyam dance traditions. The event concluded with traditional Sri Lankan dishes and Ceylon tea, providing a multisensory experience of the island’s culture.

By focusing on senior tourism and wellness, the Embassy highlighted how cultural engagement and tourism promotion can act as a form of public diplomacy, fostering understanding and connection between Sri Lanka and Germany. “Explore Sri Lanka” demonstrated how thoughtfully designed cultural events, even within a single day, can create meaningful interactions, spark interest in long-term travel, and convey the richness of a nation’s heritage to new audiences.
