Her distinguished career in diplomacy and public service spans over three decades, marked by pivotal roles in Malta’s integration into the European Union and in the country's international representation.

Ambassador Bonnici holds a First-Class Honours Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Malta, where she studied psychology, philosophy, sociology, and German. In 1991–1992, she attended Oxford University as a Chevening Scholar, earning a distinction in all subjects during her postgraduate studies in Diplomatic Studies. She later pursued advanced studies in European affairs at the Institut International d’Administration Publique (IIAP) in Paris and at the École Nationale d’Administration (ENA) in Strasbourg.

She began her diplomatic career in 1992 as First Secretary and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Malta in Bonn. Over the following years, she served in Brussels as First Secretary and later held key leadership positions at the Office of the Prime Minister of Malta, where she played a vital role in EU accession negotiations and the management of EU funds. From 2012 to 2018, Ambassador Bonnici was Malta’s Permanent Representative to the European Union, leading the Maltese delegation during the country’s first EU Council Presidency in 2017.

Her subsequent postings included Ambassador to the Netherlands and the International Organisations in The Hague (2018–2020), as well as Ambassador to Denmark (2019–2020). In 2020, she was appointed Ambassador to Germany before returning once again as Malta’s Permanent Representative to the EU (2020–2024).

Ambassador Bonnici brings a wealth of experience in European affairs, multilateral diplomacy, and international cooperation. She is fluent in Maltese, English, German, and Italian, and has working knowledge of French, Spanish, and Arabic.

In her current role in Berlin, Ambassador Bonnici is committed to further strengthening the longstanding Malta-Germany partnership, particularly in areas such as trade, culture, education, and EU cooperation. She also places a strong emphasis on supporting the Maltese community in Germany and fostering deeper people-to-people ties between both nations.

Married and a mother of one, Ambassador Bonnici continues to represent Malta with dedication and strategic vision, embodying a lifelong commitment to diplomacy and European integration.

History

malta-embassy.jpg

Diplomatic relations were established between Germany and Malta in 1965, shortly after the country gained independence. Since Malta’s accession to the European Union on May 1st 2004, the traditionally close and amicable contacts between the two countries have become even more intensive. This is underlined by the mutual visits at the highest political level.
