Embassy of Japan in Austria Marks TU Wien–University of Tokyo Exchange Anniversary
Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Toku attended 45th anniversary tree-planting ceremony

On 16 March 2026, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim Toku Satoko took part in a tree-planting ceremony held to mark the 45th anniversary of academic exchange between the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) and the University of Tokyo. The ceremony took place on the premises of TU Wien and commemorated a long-standing partnership that has contributed to the development of academic and research cooperation between the two institutions over several decades.
Ahead of the ceremony, representatives of the Japan-Austria Science Exchange Center (JASEC) at TU Wien and the University of Tokyo presented an overview of the history of exchange between the two universities. Their remarks highlighted the development of institutional ties and provided an outline of the collaboration that has been built between researchers from both universities over the course of the partnership. The presentation also reflected the continuity of this academic relationship and the significance it has held for both institutions over the past 45 years.
In her address, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Toku expressed appreciation for the close cooperation that has been fostered between TU Wien and the University of Tokyo and acknowledged the excellent research achievements that have resulted from this partnership over many years. She underlined the value of sustained academic engagement and recognised the contribution of both institutions to the advancement of scholarly exchange and joint research. She also conveyed her hope that academic exchange between the two universities, as well as between Japan and Austria more broadly, will continue to deepen in the years ahead.
The ceremony marked an important anniversary in the relationship between TU Wien and the University of Tokyo and served as a reflection of the enduring role of academic exchange in strengthening cooperation between Japan and Austria. It also reaffirmed the importance of continued dialogue, institutional partnership, and shared commitment to research and education.
