Ambassador Alison Grant has concluded her third highly productive visit to Styria, reaffirming Canada’s strong commitment to deepening bilateral ties and advancing cooperation with regional partners across Austria. The visit provided an important opportunity to further strengthen partnerships in politics, research, innovation, and economic development.

During her meeting with Governor Mario Kunasek, discussions focused on the warm bilateral relationship, new opportunities to expand cooperation between Canada and Styria, and the strong economic and research and development ties between the two partners. Their shared passion for ice hockey also featured as a point of connection.

In discussions with Regional Councillor Willibald Ehrenhöfer, the focus was placed on existing and potential new economic partnerships, with global transformation viewed as an opportunity to build even closer long-term cooperation between Canada and Styria. Shared interests span a number of sectors, including forestry, artificial intelligence, research and development, the automotive industry, and cybersecurity. At Graz University of Technology, Ambassador Grant met with Rector Horst Bischof to advance common priorities in science, technology, innovation, and talent development. With the Mitacs–TU Austria Memorandum of Understanding nearing completion, promising new opportunities are emerging for research mobility, innovation, and deeper academic collaboration, particularly in hydrogen, clean technologies, digitalization, and advanced engineering.

At HyCentA Research GmbH, the Ambassador met with Dr. Alexander Trattner and was briefed on leading developments in hydrogen research. Ongoing COMET collaborations with Canadian partners, including Simon Fraser University, Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, and Ionomr Innovations Inc., reflect the strength of the bilateral science, technology, and innovation partnership between Canada and Austria.

Canada and Styria continue to build a forward-looking partnership founded on innovation, trust, and shared ambition.
