H.E. Mr. Galib Israfilov
H.E. Mr. Galib Israfilov has served as the Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the United Nations Office at Geneva since August 2021, when he presented his credentials to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva. Prior to his appointment in Geneva, he served as Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Austria, Slovenia and Slovakia, as well as Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and Vienna-based United Nations organizations from 2011 to 2021.
A career diplomat, Mr. Israfilov joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan in 1996. During his diplomatic career, he served as Counsellor for Political Affairs at the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Washington, D.C. (2009–2011), and previously worked at the Permanent Mission of Azerbaijan to the United Nations in New York as Second Secretary and later First Secretary (2003–2005). Earlier assignments included serving as Deputy Director of the Department of Security Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2007–2009), Head of Division within the same department (2005–2007), and Third and Second Secretary at Azerbaijan’s Embassy to Austria and Permanent Mission to the OSCE (1999–2002).
Mr. Israfilov holds a degree in International Relations from Baku State University (1991–1996) and a degree in International Relations from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. (1997). He was born on 9 May 1975 in Azerbaijan and is married with three sons.
History
Azerbaijan became a member of the United Nations on 2 March 1992, following the restoration of its independence in 1991. Since joining the UN, Azerbaijan has actively participated in multilateral diplomacy, engaging on issues including international peace and security, sustainable development, humanitarian affairs, human rights, and regional cooperation. Azerbaijan has served as an elected member of several UN bodies, including the UN Security Council for the 2012–2013 term, and has contributed to discussions on conflict prevention, intercultural dialogue, and international cooperation.
The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva represents Azerbaijan in Geneva-based UN institutions and international organizations, including the Human Rights Council and other specialized agencies. The Mission works to promote Azerbaijan’s positions on a wide range of multilateral issues, including human rights, humanitarian affairs, disarmament, health, labour, and sustainable development. It also supports Azerbaijan’s engagement with Geneva-based organizations and contributes to negotiations and international cooperation within the UN system.
