From June 6 to 9, 2025, Berlin once again becomes the stage for one of Europe’s most celebrated multicultural events—the Carnival of Cultures (Karneval der Kulturen). Organized annually around Pentecost, this year’s edition draws thousands of participants and international communities, including diplomatic missions and cultural institutes, into a shared space of cultural expression and diversity.

The street festival began Friday, June 6, in Blücherplatz, Kreuzberg, with dozens of musical acts, food stalls, artistic performances, and workshops from around the world. This vibrant setting has historically been supported by embassies and state-run cultural organizations aiming to promote their nations through cultural diplomacy and public engagement.

The centerpiece of the Carnival—the international street parade—takes place on Sunday, June 8, featuring over 60 performance groups and approximately 4,500 participants. Due to ongoing construction in its traditional Kreuzberg location, this year’s parade takes a new route from Frankfurter Allee, through Karl-Marx-Allee, to Berolinastraße in Friedrichshain.

Embassies from countries across Africa, Latin America, Asia, and Eastern Europe are participating by supporting artistic groups, food stands, and folkloric performances. Notably, the Embassies of Brazil, Indonesia, and Ghana have previously co-organized performances and culinary presentations in cooperation with diaspora communities and Berlin-based cultural partners.

The Goethe-Institut, Institut Français, and other international cultural institutes have also participated in past editions by facilitating creative workshops, visual art exhibitions, and live music programming at the festival grounds, promoting intercultural understanding in line with their diplomatic missions.

The Kinderkarneval der Kulturen (Children’s Carnival) took place on Saturday, June 7, with a parade starting from Mariannenplatz and concluding in Görlitzer Park, offering family-friendly performances and cultural learning activities.

The Carnival of Cultures reflects Berlin’s global identity, where official diplomatic actors and grassroots community organizations collaborate to create a dynamic forum for cultural exchange. Through public celebration, embassies contribute to intercultural dialogue and enhance visibility for their nations in an informal, inclusive setting.
