News from Berlin - His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Higazy held a reception at the Egyptian Embassy in Berlin on June 25th. Egypt’s National Day is celebrated on the 23rd of July, in commemoration of the 1952 revolution, which ended the Egyptian Monarchy and the British occupation of Egypt. The National Day takes place during the holy month of Ramadan this year (June 28th to July 27th), hence why the reception was held just before the start of Ramadan.

The Ambassador kindly greeted his guests with his wife and an Egyptian Military official at the entrance of the Embassy. From Azerbaijan to Israel and the USA to the Congo, many Ambassadors took place in the reception, as well as Businessmen who are involved in doing business in Egypt. Military officials from other North African countries, from Egypt and Germany were also present. His Excellency thanked his guests for attending the reception during such a rainy day and expressed how happy he was that his friends and partners are showing solidarity by keeping good relations with Egypt in a particularly difficult time for his country.

He took the time to praise the good relations Germany have had for centuries. Indeed German-Egyptian relations go back a long time. In 1873 the German evangelical school was established and has existed ever since. In 1959 the Egyptian-German cultural agreement was signed and further agreements on scientific and further cultural cooperation were signed in 1979 and 1981. More recently, in 2003, the German University in Cairo was opened.

On the economic side the two countries have close ties, too. Egypt is Germany’s third trading partner in the Arab world with a trade volume of almost 3 billion euros. Additionally, about one million German tourists visit Egypt every year. Dr. Higazy said that the difficult situation Egypt is going through should not be a reason to halt the good economic and cultural relations of the two countries.
