Dream on Berlin, The 90s’ Explores a Decade of Change and Connection
An immersive exploration of art and perception
April 30th, 2025Between September 14, 2024, and January 22, 2025, C/O Berlin presented ‘Dream On Berlin, the 90s’ at the historic Amerika Haus, offering visitors a powerful look into a decade that reshaped the identity of the city and sparked new forms of international exchange.
Through more than 200 photographs from the OSTKREUZ agency established in 1990 by East German photographers the exhibition traced Berlin’s transformation after reunification. Images portrayed a city in flux, from empty lots and underground clubs to political protests and moments of personal reinvention. The 1990s were a time when Berlin redefined itself and these works captured the raw energy of that rebirth.
Set in the Amerika Haus, a landmark of U.S.-German cultural relations, the exhibition also highlighted the value of transatlantic cooperation. The U.S. Embassy in Berlin, a key supporter of the project, amplified the event on its platforms, recognizing its role in encouraging open dialogue and celebrating shared democratic ideals through the lens of contemporary photography.
By bringing together German and international voices, ‘Dream On’ became more than a retrospective it served as a space for cultural reflection and mutual understanding. The exhibition reminded visitors that art is not only a way to document history, but also a means of connecting across borders.
In this sense, ‘Dream On’ contributed quietly yet meaningfully to ongoing efforts in cultural diplomacy, showing how creative collaboration can help us make sense of the past and imagine the future.
