Czech–Danish Cultural Cooperation in Berlin Highlights Oscar-Winning Documentary
Film screening underscores cultural diplomacy and shared democratic values
March 16th, 2026A special screening of the internationally acclaimed documentary Mr. Nobody Against Putin in Berlin brought together diplomatic actors from the Czech Republic and Denmark to mark both a milestone in contemporary documentary filmmaking and the broader role of culture in international dialogue. The film projection was prepared by the Czech Centre Berlin in cooperation with the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Berlin and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Denmark in Berlin, demonstrating a coordinated effort to present a significant Czech–Danish co-production to audiences in the German capital. The documentary recently received the Oscar award for Best Feature Documentary, highlighting the growing international impact of European documentary filmmaking and reinforcing the value of cultural diplomacy in shaping public discourse.
The film, directed by David Borenstein and Pavel Talankin, tells the story of a Russian school videographer who secretly documents the indoctrination of students with pro-war propaganda following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Through footage filmed over two years in a small industrial town near the Ural Mountains, the documentary offers rare insight into how political narratives are transmitted through educational institutions in contemporary Russia. Mr. Nobody Against Putin premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2025, where it received the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award, before continuing its successful international festival circuit and ultimately winning the the Oscar award for Best Feature Documentary.
Beyond its artistic achievement, the Berlin screening illustrates the role of culture as a diplomatic instrument in fostering dialogue on democracy, freedom of expression, and the responsibilities of civil society. By organizing the event jointly, the Czech and Danish diplomatic missions together with the Czech cultural institute highlighted the collaborative nature of European cultural engagement. Such initiatives fit within broader frameworks of European cultural diplomacy, in which cultural institutions and embassies work together to facilitate public discussion on contemporary global challenges. The documentary’s focus on propaganda, civic courage, and the pressures faced by educators in authoritarian environments resonates strongly with current debates in Europe about media literacy, democratic resilience, and the protection of academic freedom.
The success of the Czech–Danish co-production also carries broader strategic implications for European audiovisual cooperation. The film was produced through cross-border collaboration involving Danish and Czech production companies and partners such as European broadcasters, illustrating the strength of Europe’s co-production model in bringing investigative documentary projects to global audiences. This model allows smaller national film industries to pool resources and expertise, enhancing their international visibility while addressing politically relevant themes. The Award recognition further amplifies the international reach of the project, demonstrating how European documentary filmmaking can contribute meaningfully to global discussions about governance, accountability, and human rights.
In this context, the Berlin screening served not merely as a cultural event but as a platform for diplomatic engagement. By presenting an award-winning documentary that addresses the societal consequences of authoritarian governance, the organizers underscored the importance of cultural institutions in promoting democratic values and open dialogue across borders. The cooperation between the Czech and Danish embassies and the Czech Centre Berlin thus exemplifies how cultural programming can reinforce bilateral relations, strengthen European partnerships, and contribute to a broader strategic narrative emphasizing the importance of freedom, critical inquiry, and cultural exchange in contemporary international relations.
