The 27th Festival du Film Francophone de Vienne (Vienna), held from March 26 to April 10, 2025, presents 28 French‑language films from across the Francophonie, offering audiences cinematic richness and the soft power of cultural diplomacy.

Organised by the Institut français d’Autriche, the festival reflects France’s longstanding commitment to cultural exchange, promoting French-language audiovisual works in Austria while nurturing intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding. This biennial event forms part of the Institute’s broader mission to project cultural values abroad and reinforce ties with the francophone world.

This year’s programme—ranging from literary adaptations and political dramas to intimate stories of friendship and activism—demonstrates cinema’s power to translate diverse cultural narratives. Literary adaptations, including four works drawn from novels and comics, became a particular highlight. Films are subtitled in German or English, making them accessible to local and international audiences alike.

Special events such as the Nuit du court‑métrage (Short‑Film Night) and a family animation afternoon extend the festival’s diplomatic reach, inviting engagement across generations. The student‑jury selected short films from Belgium, Canada, France, and Switzerland, with public voting reinforcing participatory cultural exchange. A documentary on Céline Dion also served as a unifying cultural bridge for fans of Eurovision and chanson.

More than a cinematic showcase, the festival is a celebration of cultural diplomacy in action: it creates spaces for dialogue, understanding, and shared artistic values. By inviting audiences to explore the stories of francophone nations, the Institut français strengthens cultural bonds between France, Austria, and a global audience. In doing so, it upholds the belief that film can be a powerful ambassador—conveying identity, empathy, and connection through the universal language of story.
