The Embassy of Cuba in Vienna celebrates the richness of Ibero-American cinema, inviting audiences to explore cultural diversity and artistic expression through film
August 22nd, 2025On September 23, 2025, the Cuban film Buscando a Casal (2019) will inaugurate the Ibero-American Film Nights in Vienna, a festival organized by the Instituto Cervantes de Viena. The event marks a vibrant celebration of Ibero-American cinema and highlights Cuba’s artistic contributions to the region.
The Embassy of Cuba in Vienna played a central role in promoting this cultural initiative, supporting the festival’s mission to bring the richness of Latin American storytelling to Austrian audiences. In close collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes, the Embassy encouraged both Spanish-speaking residents and the broader Viennese public to attend the four-day festival, which will feature films from countries including Cuba, Mexico, Uruguay and Ecuador.
Buscando a Casal, directed by Jorge Luis Sánchez, pays tribute to the modernist Cuban poet Julián del Casal, exploring his intellectual journey and confrontation with Spanish colonial authority. The film has garnered critical acclaim, including the top award in the Fiction category at the Cine Plaza Festival 2023 in Havana, a nomination for Best Ibero-American Film at the Goya Awards, consideration for the Oscars in the Best International Feature Film category, and multiple Platino Award nominations in categories such as original music, acting, and art direction.
Festival organizers have emphasized that all films will include English subtitles, ensuring that Vienna’s diverse audience can engage with the stories and artistic vision of Ibero-American filmmakers.
