The Woka Kuma Festival 2022 will showcase many different parts of the culture of Burkina Faso and create a dialogue between Germans and Burkinabéans.

The festival, which will take place in Kreuzberg, will include festive activities such as a workshop on dance, exhibitions and a small art and textile market. The market will also have possibilities to purchase African sweets and other food.

The people performing on stage will be, amongst others, the Grand Faso Orkestra with singers Rama N’goni, Sako Wana, Djah Barro and Jimas Sanwidi. Other performers will include slam poetry artist Alani Abdoussamadou and Serges Somé. The slam poetry performance will also include dancing by the latter.

The dance workshops will take place in the Groove Zentrum für Percussion and are available on both Saturday and Sunday. The teacher of these workshops will be professional dancer Serges Somé, and the attendants can learn both modern and traditional dances from Burkina Faso. The exhibition will include photographs taken by Bärbel Maessen and Gustav Rausch of the partner festival WOKA KUMA in Bobo-Dioulasso 2019.

There will also be a discussion panel, where dance experts will hold a panel discussion called “Hand-in-Hand across borders - how dance can contribute to peace”. This is a relevant discussion in light of the political instability in Burkina Faso.
