The Primeminister of Canada, Mark Carney, and the outgoing Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Olaf Scholz, held a conversation earlier this month to highlight the results of the Hannover Messe 2025 industrial fair, where Canada was the official partner country. Both leaders underscored the value of the event as a platform for strengthening bilateral economic ties and promoting technological innovation in an environment of international cooperation.

During the dialogue, Carney and Scholz also discussed the importance of transatlantic partners working together to protect global security and strengthen economic ties in an international context marked by growing trade tensions. The Canadian Prime Minister shared his strategy to counter unjustified U.S. trade actions, protect Canadian workers and businesses, and continue to promote domestic economic growth.

The two leaders reaffirmed the strength of the Canada-Germany relationship, characterised by active cooperation in areas such as trade, climate change, clean energy, innovation and human rights, according to the Government of Canada's official website on bilateral relations. Germany is Canada's largest trading partner in the European Union and a key ally in multilateral fora such as the G7, NATO and the UN.

The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which has been provisionally in force since 2017, has contributed to increased investment and trade flows between the two countries. At the strategic level, Canada and Germany maintain close cooperation on defence and international security, including joint peacekeeping and crisis response missions. Both countries share a common vision on the need to strengthen the rules-based international order and promote sustainable and equitable development.

Prime Minister Carney and Chancellor Scholz agreed to maintain regular contact to further strengthen the bilateral partnership.
