British Shorts Summer Edition Returns to Berlin With Open-Air Cinema Showcase
Independent films from the UK and Ireland light up the city across three iconic venues
July 29th, 2025The presentation of the 2025 Venice Biennale in Berlin underscored architecture’s potential not just as an art form, but as a vehicle for cultural diplomacy. Bringing Italy’s most prestigious international arts event to the heart of Germany demonstrated a renewed commitment to shared European values through creative exchange.
This summer’s edition showcases 26 short films across three evening screenings. The selection spans multiple genres including fiction, documentary, animation, comedy, horror, and experimental film. Each film offers a concise but powerful glimpse into current creative voices from the British Isles.
Highlights include Ham, a witty family drama by Fiona Hampton; Muna, an emotional portrait of identity and belonging; and Butter Fingers, a surreal commentary on social anxieties. Many of the films have already earned acclaim at major festivals such as Cannes, Sundance, and the Berlinale.
British Shorts is more than a film screening—it’s a cultural meeting point. Supported by UK cultural institutions and organized by the Berlin-based Lichtspielklub, the festival has become a space for cross-border dialogue and collaboration. With its informal atmosphere and open-air setting, the Summer Edition captures the best of Berlin’s film culture and international spirit.
