The Brandenburg Gate was illuminated on the evening of May 9, 2026, to mark Europe Day, a celebration of the historic Schuman Declaration of 1950. This commemorative act, supported by the Berlin Senate, honors the foundational plan for a united and peaceful Europe that eventually evolved into the modern European Union.
Europe Day serves as a reminder of the EU's role as a "continent of peace," a transformation recognized by the Nobel Institute when it awarded the European Union the Nobel Peace Prize in 2012. As part of the ongoing 2026 activities related to cultural diplomacy, Berlin continues to serve as a hub for inter-institutional cooperation between the European Commission and the European Parliament.
Located directly at the Brandenburg Gate, the multimedia "Experience Europe" center offered specialized programming on May 10, featuring expert discussions on the EU budget. For those unable to attend the weekend festivities, the permanent multilingual exhibition remains open daily from 10:00 to 18:00.
