Berlin Museum Island Collections Head to Armenia in Historic Cultural Exchange
Cooperation agreement marks first exhibition of Museum Island holdings outside Germany
February 12th, 2026On January 27, a cooperation agreement was signed in Berlin between the History Museum of the Republic of Armenia and the Museum of Prehistory and Early History, part of Berlin’s Museum Island. The agreement was formalized by the directors of the two institutions, Dr. David Poghosyan and Prof. Dr. Matthias Wemhoff, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Armenian-German cultural collaboration.
As part of this partnership, the History Museum of the Republic of Armenia will host a major exhibition later this year featuring selected collections from Berlin’s Museum Island. The exhibition will explore antiquity and its cosmological concepts, presenting objects from various museums on Museum Island alongside comparable artifacts from the Armenian museum’s own holdings. This curatorial dialogue aims to highlight shared cultural narratives and foster deeper scholarly and public engagement with ancient civilizations.
The initiative is particularly significant as it represents the first time that Museum Island will present exhibits outside Germany. The decision to stage the exhibition in Yerevan is also linked to the commemoration of the bicentenary of Berlin’s Museum Island, with the History Museum of Armenia selected as the partner institution and venue for this landmark occasion. The collaboration underscores the mutual trust and high level of professional exchange between the two museums.
In a reciprocal gesture, an exhibition showcasing collections from the History Museum of the Republic of Armenia is planned to take place in Berlin next year. The Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to the Federal Republic of Germany, H.E. Mr. Viktor Yengibaryan, attended the signing ceremony and welcomed the launch of this unprecedented cooperation. In his remarks, he emphasized its importance within the broader framework of strategic partnership and cultural dialogue between Armenia and Germany.
The agreement reflects a shared commitment to strengthening cultural ties and promoting mutual understanding through museum cooperation. By facilitating the exchange of significant historical collections, both institutions contribute to deepening Armenian-German relations and enhancing international appreciation of their rich cultural heritage.
