On November 9, Berlin commemorated the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, a moment that forever changed history. Known as the Festival for Freedom, the event transformed Berlin into a lively scene of celebration. Along a four-kilometer stretch, video installations relived the dramatic night of November 9, 1989, reminding visitors of the courage that led to the Wall’s fall and Germany’s reunification.

At Brandenburg Gate, the Band for Freedom with over 1,000 musicians performed classic songs like David Bowie’s Heroes. The performance for a large and enthusiastic crowd captured the spirit of unity that Berlin now embodies. Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Mayor Kai Wegner gave speeches about the importance of democracy and freedom, and the night ended with an impressive fireworks display.

Several museums also held special exhibits to honor the occasion. The Berlin Wall Memorial featured a program showcasing the stories of those who fought for freedom, while the Humboldt Forum presented a look at the history of East Germany’s Palace of the Republic. The event also drew international attention, with diplomats from the U.S., France, and the U.K. joining the celebrations, emphasizing the global importance of the Wall’s fall. The anniversary was. not just a look back at history—it was a reminder of the values of freedom, democracy, and unity.
